During World War II, a brave group named the St Paul's Watch were committed to saving the iconic Cathedral from the fate of so many other buildings around London.
An easy target for aerial attacks, the Cathedral was at risk of burning down throughout the war. The St Paul's Watch acted as the Cathedral's personal fire brigade, dedicated to keeping watch, putting out fires, and protecting the beautiful structure from damage.
The St Paul's Watch was made up of over 300 volunteers including local residents, Cathedral clergy and staff, and retired architects. To celebrate and highlight this dedicated group, St Paul's Cathedral will be home to a free outdoor exhibition from May 2025 until October 2025.
Saving St Paul's: The Watch and the Second World War is located in the Cathedral Gardens, and tells the incredible stories of the Watch. Find out more about their efforts and how they saved the Cathedral during the war.
